Objectives: Most institutions have adopted PICC management education as a face to face method or demonstration; thus, it may be inefficient compared to the efforts that medical staff provide. This study evaluated the effectiveness of video-assisted education for PICC self management in cancer patients and caregivers. Methods: The knowledge of PICC management was investigated by administering 12 key items in an assessment using a 4-point Likert scale. Cross-sectional surveys were given at base line, immediately after education, and four weeks later. A t-test was used to compare the pre-and post-assessment scores. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to adjust for age, gender, marital status, education, region, primary cancer site, stage, and placement in PICC management. Results: Two hundred and twenty participants agreed to participate: 125 cancer patients and 95 caregivers. The mean ages (standard deviation) of the patients and caregivers were 51.7 (10.7) and 48.1 (12.4), respectively. Immediately after the video-assisted education, more than 80% of the participants provided correct answers, and significant improvement in patients’ and caregivers’ knowledge (p < 0.01) was found. The level of patients’ observed anxiety decreased after education and after four weeks from 1.4 to 1.2 (p = 0.052), respectively. Compared to caregivers, patients had a higher level of knowledge regarding PICC management (OR 2.24; 95% CI, 1.20-4.17). Conclusion: Video-assisted education for PICC management is an efficient and effective alter native education to face-to-face instruction and can improve knowledge, reduce anxiety, and increase confidence and self-care performance by patients and caregivers.
